About Purbanchal University School of Medical Sciences (PUSMS)
Purbanchal University School of Medical Sciences (PUSMS), operating under the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Purbanchal University, is one of the emerging government medical education institutions in Nepal. Located in Gothgaun, Morang District, Koshi Province, the institution was established to strengthen medical education, healthcare services, clinical research, and healthcare workforce development in eastern Nepal.
The Faculty of Medical Sciences (PUFOMS) and the Purbanchal University School of Health Sciences (PUSHS) serve as the foundation for the university’s medical and health science programs. The institution offers education in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and allied health sciences while focusing on practical learning, clinical training, research, and community-oriented healthcare services.
One of the major recent developments is the approval of the university’s MBBS program by Nepal’s Medical Education Commission. The School of Medicine received authorization to launch the MBBS course with an initial intake of 50 students, marking a significant milestone in the university’s expansion into full-scale medical education.
The institution is closely connected with the developing Purbanchal University Teaching Hospital (PUTH), which serves as the primary teaching hospital for clinical training. The teaching hospital is being developed as a major healthcare center for eastern Nepal and aims to expand into a 300-bed tertiary-care teaching hospital. Students gain exposure to hospital-based learning, community health services, and practical medical training through affiliated healthcare facilities and district-level healthcare networks.
The campus is situated in a peaceful rural environment surrounded by greenery, agricultural land, and natural landscapes. It is located near Biratnagar and Itahari, providing accessibility while maintaining a focused academic atmosphere. The university has access to a large campus area of approximately 545 hectares dedicated to higher education, research, and professional training.
PUSMS emphasizes modern medical education through advanced laboratories, research activities, skilled faculty members, digital learning resources, and interdisciplinary healthcare training. The institution aims to produce competent, ethical, and community-oriented healthcare professionals capable of serving both Nepal and the international healthcare sector.
