About Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences (PoAHS)
Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences (PoAHS) is one of the most important government medical education and healthcare institutions in Nepal. It is located in Ramghat, Pokhara Metropolitan City-11, within Gandaki Province. Established under the Government of Nepal, PoAHS plays a dual role: it functions both as a medical teaching institute and a tertiary-level referral hospital, making it a key center for healthcare services and medical education in western Nepal.PoAHS is situated in Ramghat, Pokhara, a highly strategic and accessible location in the heart of the city. Pokhara is one of Nepal’s most beautiful and developed urban centers, surrounded by hills, lakes, and the Himalayan range. The academy lies near the Seti River, which gives the campus a calm and scenic environment. This natural setting provides a peaceful learning atmosphere for medical students while also being close to a large patient population, which is important for clinical training.
The origins of PoAHS are linked to the historic Western Regional Hospital. The hospital itself has a long history dating back to 1957 when it was initially established as the Soldier Board Hospital. Over time, it underwent multiple upgrades and expansions, gradually becoming one of the largest government hospitals outside Kathmandu Valley.
In 2015 (2072 BS), the Government of Nepal formally upgraded the Western Regional Hospital into the Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences through the Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences Act. This transformation was done to integrate healthcare services with medical education and research under a single institution.
