About Madhesh Institute of Health Sciences (MIHS)
Madhesh Institute of Health Sciences (MIHS) is a government-owned autonomous medical institution located in Janakpurdham, Dhanusha District, Madhesh Province, Nepal. Established in 2021 under the Madhesh Institute of Health Sciences Act 2077, the institution was created to strengthen medical education, healthcare services, and research activities in the Madhesh region while addressing the shortage of skilled healthcare professionals.
The institute was founded with the vision of creating sustainable local capacity for specialized healthcare and improving access to quality medical services for people across Madhesh Province. MIHS focuses on medical education, clinical training, public health development, and community-oriented healthcare services. Its mission emphasizes reducing disease burden, disability, and healthcare disparities through education, research, and advanced healthcare delivery.
MIHS operates through the Provincial Hospital in Janakpurdham, which is being upgraded into a modern teaching hospital. The institution has plans for a large specialized teaching hospital with approximately 500–700 beds and advanced healthcare facilities. The teaching hospital provides clinical services in medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine, laboratory services, radiology, and other specialty departments, allowing students to gain valuable hands-on clinical experience.
The institute offers a growing range of academic programs including MBBS, Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNS), B.Sc. Nursing, Bachelor of Public Health (BPH), Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT), Midwifery programs, and postgraduate MD/MS specialization courses. The MBBS program follows international medical education standards and combines theoretical learning with practical hospital-based training.
