About Institute of Medicine (IOM), Tribhuvan University
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is the oldest and one of the most prestigious medical institutions in Nepal. Established in 1972 under Tribhuvan University, IOM was founded with the mission of producing qualified healthcare professionals, strengthening medical education, advancing research, and improving healthcare services throughout the country. It is widely regarded as a pioneer in Nepal’s medical education system and remains one of the most respected institutions for MBBS and health sciences studies.
The central campus of IOM is the Maharajgunj Medical Campus in Kathmandu, which serves as the academic hub for medical, dental, nursing, public health, allied health sciences, and postgraduate programs. Over the years, IOM has expanded into multiple constituent campuses, affiliated colleges, teaching hospitals, and specialized academic centers across Nepal.
One of the institution’s greatest strengths is the renowned Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), a major tertiary-care teaching hospital with approximately 700 beds and several super-specialty services. The hospital provides extensive clinical exposure through departments such as Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Orthopedics, Cardiology, Neurology, Emergency Medicine, and Intensive Care. The large patient inflow gives students valuable hands-on experience throughout their medical training.
IOM offers a wide range of academic programs including MBBS, BDS, BAMS, Nursing, Public Health, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Imaging Technology, Optometry, Audiology and Speech Language Pathology, MD/MS, MDS, DM, MCh, MPH, MSc, and PhD programs. The institute currently runs more than 60 academic programs ranging from undergraduate to doctoral and super-specialty levels.
